Christopher started the car and drove away, thinking about how he should tell Chloe the truth that it was the man who cheated on her in the first place.
At his house, Christopher handed Chloe some tissues, because her make-up on her face was like a mess and looked all pathetic. You could hear that she had restrained much of her tears in a stranger’s place.
"Don’t cry anymore." Christopher sat beside her and patted her back, held her gently into his arms.
She tried her best to stay sane and wanted to push him away and failed.
"Don’t push me away."
"..." Chloe kept crying, tears mixed with make-up dyed his white shirt black. He could felt the wetness and was surprised what a river a woman could cry, but at the same time he felt sorry for what had happened to her.
"Chloe?" he had wanted to tell her the truth but after a second thought, he decided if she didn’t see it for herself, she wouldn’t ever believe the truth that her boyfriend had been gallivanting with another woman.
"Yes?"
"Never mind, you can cry if it makes you feel better."
"I’m sorry Mr. Cleveland, about what just happened..." Chloe had pulled herself together a bit and stopped crying gradually.
"It doesn’t matter." Christopher ruffled her soft hair and held her like a little kitten.
Chloe now had calmed herself down and gently pushed Christopher away.
"Don’t want to cry anymore?"
"Yeah."
Christopher finally loosened his arms. He stood to get her a cup of water, "drink it."
Chloe sipped the cup of water and recalled what Liam had said and done, feeling more curious than angry and wrongly treated. Normally Liam would never start to accuse her with just a glance before figuring out the situation no matter what. What happened today was very odd.
"Mr. Cleveland, how should I explain it to him?" Chloe asked in a sad, nasal voice.
"Just the truth is fine, it should only be his problem if he doesn’t believe you." then Christopher poured himself a cup of water too.
"Right..." Chloe hesitated and looked to Christopher, with still watery eyes. Clinging on to the last slightest hope, she dreamed that maybe the reason why Liam had acted like that was he was in a bad mood today. "Thank you."
Christopher looked at her, her eyes were as red as a rabbit’s, and swollen. The two sat there silently for a while and were ready to go to bed.
"Go wash up and sleep. It is partly my fault that he has mistaken you. So before he forgives you, you can sleep here, I’m in the next room, you can come to me if you need anything. Good night." Christopher patted her shoulder, turned and left. Though what had happened tonight had nothing to do with him, it still was absolutely not good choice to tell her the truth right now.
After the wash-up, Chloe went to bed. She was a little surprised that in such a short time, she had started to trust Christopher and was not worried at all that he would break into her room. Suddenly she believed Mr. Cleveland was a kind person, she must have mistook him.
Before falling asleep, she called Liam again but it was hung up. Chloe suddenly lost her patience and stopped trying anymore. she pulled the covers over her head and decided to sleep.
Early in the next morning, Chloe found a pad on her door, saying:
you are given a leave today, have a good rest and think about it.
Christopher
Chloe was kind of moved for no reason, and the next second, memory of being kicked out by Liam just came rushing back. Tears were swirling in her eyes but she would not cry like a baby again like she had last night.
When the one hundred and seventh call was rejected, her phone shut down automatically. Chloe sat on her bed and covered her head under the sheet, overwhelmed by sadness, but she could do nothing because Liam wouldn’t pick up the phone. Actually, when the twentieth call was made, the warning tone had already become Sorry, the phone you are calling is shut down.
Chloe got up and went outdoor. She watched the big mansion before her and felt like in a dream. She didn’t even notice it when she came here last night.
Maybe only a young man like Christopher would have his own mansion.
Chloe looked at a totally strange neighborhood, she asked a lot of people and finally found the bus stop. She got on the bus and went back to Liam’s apartment and went upstairs.
She knocked the door.
"Who is it?" Liam opened the door. He looked at Chloe in a clean dress, still as innocent and pretty as before, and felt so guilty. However, there was no turning back in this whole drama.
"Listen Liam, that man and I were not together, he was just the president of our company. Could we just stop this madness and talk about it?"
"I think we should break up..."
"Break up?"
Chloe tried to took Liam’s hand but he dodged it. She was greeted by cold eyes and tightened lips. All the affections she had for him were crushed to dust in that on single moment and she just couldn’t believe it.
"We should see other people! Why do you think I wanted to be with you in the very beginning? Now I can tell you clearly. It was because I wanted to fuck you, but oh you are so virtuous and never let me touch you!"
"... Liam... you are..."
"I’ve always wanted to tell you but you have always been so immature. I was afraid you wouldn’t take it, so I think it’s time now." Liam closed the door after he was done. Chloe pushed the door desperately but she was not strong enough to get where she wanted.
Finally, the door was locked.
"Is she gone?" Inside the door, Ronda came out the bathroom in a towel, smelled like Dior, sexed the air all up.
"Yeah."
"So you just want to fuck me too?" Ronda swung her way before him and wrapped her arms around his shoulder, sexy and charming. Liam smiled.
"I do not just want to fuck you, but want to fuck you for the rest of my life."
While Chloe, who was outside the door, would never know what was happening inside. She just wandered like a ghost down the stairs.
"Oh Liam..." Chloe burst into tears again and collapsed on the bench beside a flower bed. She hugged her knees tight against her chest and looked so small. In that position she sat for the whole rest of that afternoon.
"How come you are here?" It was Christopher’s voice. He picked her up without waiting for an answer and walked towards the car.
Minutes later they were back at Christoper’s. Chloe sat on Christoper’s couch with a blank face.
"Am I stupid?"
"Yeah."
"..."
"And dumb, have no taste in man."
"..."
"But generally, it doesn’t stop a man from liking you." Christopher put the takeout on the table as he was talking.
"These are not healthy." Chloe stared at these food with a blank face, "can I live here before I find somewhere else? He broke up with me."
Something flickered through Christopher’s eyes. He looked to Chloe.
"I can cook, do your laundry and clean, I won’t invade your personal space, I just need a place to sleep. If you want rent, I can give you!" Chloe tried to squeeze a smile but failed.
"You don’t have to do so much, you can just cook. Use whatever you want in the house, choose whichever room you like, I don’t mind you sharing a room with me. As for rent, one thousand bucks a day, it is acceptable?" Christopher smiled at Chloe, with such tenderness in his eyes, and Chloe gaped at him.
"One thousand bucks... a day?"
"I’m joking, you can live here as long as you like, no rent."
"Thank you, Mr.Cleveland."
"You are welcome."
"You are a good person." Chloe put a piece of chicken in her mouth and chew insipidly. Having been labeled as a good person, Christopher sort of made fun of her to himself. How could this girl be this dumb that she didn’t even know she herself had already been labeled?
"I um, kind of like you actually..."
"..." Chloe was taken by surprise, her fork dropped on the ground and the sound echoed in the living room.
"You don’t have to be so surprised, just take you time to process this information." Telling the truth is always praised, and Christopher believed he could use that praise right now.
And right at the same night, the house maid received a call.
"you don’t have to come over and cook for me. You are going to have a paid vacation till I ask you back."
