The next day, when Alyssa walked into the office, she sensed something off. People were pointing at her.
The fact that her boyfriend was the son of the owner of the Xu Group traveled through the office like a tornado.
Some employees made harsh, jealous remarks about her behind her back. Some speculated that she had joined JK Group with an ulterior motive.
In this materialistic, fast-paced society, public morals were declining day by day; people made most use of their connections to get what they wanted.
Since Alyssa had such a rich and powerful boyfriend, to many people’s eyes, it just didn’t make sense that she went to her boyfriend’s rival’s company instead of his.
Just like that, Basil easily made her a hot topic.
She remained calm in this situation. There wasn’t really anything she could do about it. Explanation would be pointless. She decided to work hard to prove who she was and what she was.
JK Group had bought a piece of land in the south of the city and was going to build an apartment building there.
Before Aaron got it, many developers had had their eye on it.
Well-located, the south of the city was convenient and beautiful. It was common knowledge to people familiar with the market that an apartment complex there would make a lot of money for the developer.
JK Group had held two meetings to discuss the design and the construction plan. At today’s meeting, Pamela put forward a carefully worked-out plan and shared many brilliant ideas. Alyssa didn’t know much about real estate development, but she knew that there was a problem with that land.
But she couldn’t just say that at the meeting. She had to get some work done to make it more convincing.
After work, Alyssa went to the hospital where her dad worked, took his car and drove to the land. It had just rained. The land was wet and muddy. She put on her sneakers and got out of the car to survey the land. It had been railed in to prevent irrelevant people from intruding.
Piles of bricks and heaps of cement were covered with plastic sheets.
Few people were around the area. Alyssa stooped down and entered the site. She looked around. Soon, her white sneakers were covered with mud. Standing on the vacant land, she shivered a little when the cool breeze blew on her face.
After a while, she sat back in the car and called Callum. He wasn’t in charge of the core parts of the project, but he had participated in every procedure of the project.
"Do you have the quality assessment report on the land in the south of the city?" she asked.
"Why ask?"
Callum was wearing pajamas, holding a cup of freshly brewed coffee. When she called, he had just sat on the sofa.
"Just asking. I’m here on the land."
She turned on the speaker, put her phone at the front of the car, and started reversing the car to leave.
"What are you doing there?
Didn’t it just rain? It must be muddy there."
"Callum, do you really think this land is suitable for real estate?" she asked.
Callum had put the coffee cup to his mouth. Upon hearing her question, he raised his eyebrow and put it down on the table. "It shouldn’t concern you. Stay out of it."
"You’re right. It’s none of my business. But a company should value its reputation. Once it loses its reputation, it loses everything, and it will lead to its doom."
After saying that, she hung up.
Callum was surprised. Holding his phone, he smiled. It turned out he had underestimated her after all.
