The next day was a rare sunny day when Sean went to the hospital. His hood edged with fox fur was aglow with warmth in the sunshine. Gene reached out to it, looking at Sean with glistening dark brown pupils.
"What's wrong, doctor?" Sean glanced aside at him. The section of neck in the collar was immensely white.
"You see." Gene suddenly smiled and lifted that circle of animal hair with his hand and stuck it on Sean's cheek. "Is it like a little tiger?"
Sean burst into laughter, wondering why the doctor had such a sense of humor.
But he couldn't laugh again before long as the chemotherapy was even more painful than the last. Sean's sideburns were wet with sweat, doubling up all the time with vomiting. Sean refrained from making a sound no matter how agonizing it was. Gene called his name gently from a distance. Sean raised his head after a long time with moist eyes. His lips trembled before he said: "So sore......"
Gene had a heartache suddenly. In fact, what he said just now was a lie. Such a fragile and emaciated Sean didn't resemble even a weak little tiger. He was more like a little kitten without sharp claws, which could be hurt by everything when it was heedless.
"Have a rest at my office." Gene took him to his office. "I'll give you some more medicine."
Sean was so weak without any strength, so he did not refuse it. But what he did not expect was that the doctor's single bed had been cushioned with a thick mattress with a soft blanket covering on it. Sean was somewhat at a loss.
"Lie down for some time. I have work later." Gene didn'think too much and spreaded out the light blanket for him by the way. It seemed to be aired just now, smacking of the sun which was sweet and soft.
Sean buried half of his face into the light blue coverlid which smelled of sunshine, feeling like crying inexplicable. Those people having been bearing hardships for a long time were not afraid of others' malignity but only their kindness as they were unable to repay it.
"Sleep a little longer." Gene drew half of the curtain: "I'll wake you up later."
Sean was mentally and physically tired so he fell asleep soon. Gene sat before the desk absent-minded. He was not very clear about his feelings to Sean. He got pained when seeing Sean suffering, he got out of sorts when seeing the hickeys on Sean's body and he got annoyed out of Sean's acceptance and steadfast loyalty for another man.
Gene had a powerful family, but he was always self-restrained because of his work. He did not smoke, did not drink, and did not indulge in debauchery. He was only interested in cars and raising flowers, and the latter was cultivated by his father.
He sent his favorite orchid to Sean when they had only met a few times. Gene spun the pen and smiled unconsciously.
Sean had not had such a good sleep for a long time, which was deep, peaceful, warm and safe. He did not even dream much, except an osmanthus tree in the sun, which was sweet and gentle.
Gene didn't wake him up, and it was dark when Sean woke up naturally. He had no work at night this day and came over early to see Sean.
"Awake?"Gene closed the medical report with a smile.
Sean looked a little better, getting up hurriedly: "Sorry to bother you."
"Don't stand on ceremony." Gene shook his head quite disapprovingly. He pointed to the heat preservation bottle on the edge of the bed and said: "I asked someone to send me the herbal cuisine. Go home after you eat it."
Sean was stunned, feeling Gene was somewhat weird all the day.
