Alyssa got in a cab at the airport and headed for JK Group. When she got there, she went straight to Aaron’s office, but he wasn’t there; so she hurried towards the meeting room.
Not caring what those people were discussing, she barged in without looking at anybody.
All gazes landed on her. The people present started talking among themselves. But Alyssa ignored all of them.
She slapped the file envelope on the table in front of Aaron, gasping, and began calmly, “Here!
The one-hundred-million contract! I convinced them to resign it.”
As soon as she finished speaking, the muttering among the others got louder.
Alyssa was upset. She wanted to pound the table and tell them to shut up. But she was too tired to even do that.
While Aaron thumbed through the contract, she said flatly, “Well, since you’ve already gotten the contract, my work is done. I’m going home. I haven't eaten or slept in three days. I’ve started seeing double. And I left my soul in America.”
Aaron looked up and met her eyes. Alyssa put one hand on the table and leaned in, saying, “I’ll hand in my resignation in a few days. Please keep a tight rein on your employees. They already kicked me out. Don’t make trouble for me again. I’m going home to sleep. Bye, everybody.”
She was smiling, but no smile could conceal her fatigue and sorrow. Her eyes were ringed and full of disappoint.
She took a cab home. Once she arrived, she rushed to her bedroom, climbed in bed and fell asleep instantly. She had such a long sleep her mother started worrying that she was sick. Alyssa didn’t wake up until thirty hours later. She was too hungry. As it happened, it was lunch time. She sat at the table in cartoon pajamas, her hair messy. When she ate, her eyes were half closed.
Her father sensed something was off. She was much thinner and exhausted after the business trip.
“Kiddo, what’s the matter?” he asked.
Alyssa hadn’t shed a single tear when she found out that Pamela had set her up, or when Terrel turned her down or cuffed her or made her compete against him. But right now, one sentence from her father, her tears flowed like a broken dam, flooding her face.
She dropped her chopsticks, bent over the table and sobbed. Her shaking body and suppressed crying broke her parents’ hearts. Alyssa had always been strong. The girl had once fought with a punk when she was in college, and was stabbed and almost died. But she never cried. However, right now, she was crying her heart out. Something must be very wrong.
Her father rose from his chair, walked over to her and took her into his arms. “Kiddo, tell me what happened. Stop crying. You know how sad it makes me.”
Alyssa was five years older than her brother, Gareth. When they were little, her parents didn’t have enough money to support two kids, so Alyssa was sent to the countryside to live with her grandparents. She was outgoing and of free spirit. The children of the entire village liked her and listened to her. Back then, she always wore short hair. Once she disliked someone, she would beat them up. There was a time when she believed she was a boy.
When Gareth was two years old, he was taken to the countryside to live with their grandparents too. Alyssa was tough, but she was also caring. Even though she was very young at that time, she already took care of her little brother. Hence, basically, Gareth was brought up by Alyssa. So, he wasn’t afraid of his parents, but he was afraid of his sister, who he loved most among his family.
“Alyssa, who upset you? Tell me, and I’ll kill them!” Gareth assured her.
The siblings fought a lot with each other. But if anybody dared to offend his sister or hurt her, he would make them pay!
