It was the first time Janiya sat with Nigel. Were it in the past, she would run from him far enough, but this time, she felt that being closer to him would make her less nervous facing the two elders.
Nigel apparently noticed this. He looked at the woman beside him with deep-set eyes. Then he chuckled, but just for a moment, so she didn't see.
"Nigel, come with me." Without another word, his father suddenly said as he saw Janiya coming. He got up and walked out of the dining room first, which made Janiya feel a little embarrassed.
Nigel put down his chopsticks, before he left, he reassured Janiya, "You just eat, don’t worry." He put his hands on her head and rumpled her hair gently. She could feel his palm touching her scalp, then she nodded, watched him leaving the dining room and following his father to the reading room.
Only Nigel's stepmother and her were alone in the dining room. She was not one for words, so she just concentrating on her plate and finished sentences for Nigel’s stepmother’s from time to time. Fortunately, she was a sociable person, which took away the awkwardness between them.
"How did you and Nigel get together?"
Janiya frowned slightly, how could she reply this question ... she hasn't discussed the answer with Nigel yet. She smiled at Nigel’s stepmother embarrassingly, fortunately she didn't ask again, but just said, "Nigel is a bit tough in his way of life. You’re just gonna have to put up with him."
"It doesn't matter, I’ll deal with it." Janiya said with her head down.
"I feel sorry for Nigel. After his mother’s death, he became very eccentric. It pains me to see him like this, so I let him do whatever he likes. Anyway, I want him to be happier." Tears filled her eyes when she said this, which made Janiya feel that she seemed to harbor so much grievances and frustrations.
Janiya knew that she was the birth mother of Nathan, but she never heard Nathan mentioning his mother. Now, as she look at her, she felt that being Nathan’s mother wasn’t easy. Although she hated Nathan, she couldn’t bear to hurt his mother.
"Is his busy at work? There’s nothing I can do for him. He’s unwilling to talk with us." When she said this, Janiya was a little skeptical, but she didn't answer directly.
She always felt that she was trying to get information from her.
Perhaps she was really worrying about Nigel.
Facing with her question, she didn't know how to answer her. Finally, a loud sound came from upstairs, which helped her out of that. She hurried to walk out but saw Nigel going downstairs, his face deadpan. He walked directly to her, pulled her wrist and left the house.
Until she got into Nigel's car, when the car had driven out of the villa area and drove on a deserted highway, he then stopped the car, leaning on the seat, eyes closed, without saying a word.
"Nigel?" It was the first time for Janiya to see Nigel being like this. He used to traipse in front of her like a bitch, but when he went silent and quiet, she felt that there was a wide gap between them, which she couldn't cross over.
Although she didn't know what happened to him and his father just now, she had a feeling that they must have a tremendous conflict which made him so sad.
"You can speak out about the things bothering you. Don’t you feel bad if you keep that anger bottled up?" Finally, Janiya couldn't help but say.
"Shut up." Janiya really kept quiet for his shout.
After all, there was somethings that only him could deal with , others could do nothing.
So, while he leaned against the seat quietly, absorbing his own affairs, she was playing phone game. They didn’t bother each other
However, Nigel suddenly grabbed Janiya’s phone. At such a pivotal time of her game, she hastened to take her phone back, but Nigel threatened her, "I'm so annoyed, but you have fun playing game?"
"I’m not the one who made you annoyed. What about me? Just go for the one who upsets you. Give me back the phone!" She couldn’t get her phone and also felt anxious. If he discovered her secrets on the phone, then her identity and purpose would be exposed.
"You’re really an ungrateful woman." Nigel threw her phone back to her. She clasped it tightly as if it was a rarity, for fear of losing it again.
"Why am I ungrateful?" Janiya heard what he said, and she got the point, so she asked promptly.
She just persuaded him to let it move on. But he didn't appreciate it. Should she to blame for this?
"I ask you a question now, and be honest."
Nigel suddenly got serious, which made Janiya a little nervous. She said frankly, "Okay, but no personal question."
"If something happened to me, would you care about me?"
Looking his serious eyes, Janiya knew that there must be something serious had happened to him and his father. Otherwise, proud as him, how could he suddenly talk about it.
"Answer me, I want to hear the truth." Nigel repeated his question.
Janiya sighed, then said seriously, "I don't know what others think, but if it happened to me, I think I would."
Hearing Janiya's resolute answer, Nigel was so excited that he held her in his arms. Even though it was difficult to make such a gesture in the car, he still refused to let her go.
Janiya was frightened by his sudden move. She pushed him away rapidly and asked, "What are you doing?"
Nigel put on a wicked smile and said, "You are my wife. What I want to do with you all make sense."
"Don't forget, we are just acting. Sooner or later we’ll divorce." Janiya said firmly. The smile on Nigel’s face faded away. Eventually, he restarted the car, with the steering wheel in his hands, he asked, "No one wants to get near with me. Even my father hates me. Why you still care about me?"
"Because ..." Janiya looked at herself in the rear-view mirror and said slowly, "We are all in this together."
Maybe this world, the least one who didn’t want him be caught in danger was Janiya. For her mission relied on him.
