Over the course of two years, many of the children from the same group were adopted, but only Yimo and Gu Zechen were left behind because they were meant to be together.
Due to urban renovation and the relocation of the welfare institution, Gu Zechen, who was only thirteen years old, left the welfare institution, knowing the difficulties faced by the institution's director. He didn't take anything with him except for his five-year-old sister, Yi Mo.
"Brother Chen, where are we going? I miss Madam Dean!" As night fell, Yimo held Gu Zechen's hand, tears welling up in her eyes. She said, "Brother Chen, I'm hungry!"
Gu Zechen stopped in his tracks, looking around at the desolate surroundings. After searching for a while, he finally found a noodle shop that had not yet closed. He used the money given to him by Dean Xia Ying to buy a bowl of noodles.
Yi Mo ate quickly, and in a moment, she finished all the noodles, not even leaving a drop of soup behind.
"Gege Chen, I'm so full!"
Gu Zechen nodded and gently wiped the corner of Yi Mo's mouth. Then, he held Yi Mo's hand and they left the noodle shop.
Under the cover of night, the streets flickered with dim white lights. Yimo, feeling tired, yawned and said, "Cheng Gege, I'm sleepy!"
Gu Zechen touched the money in his pocket and surveyed the surrounding shops and residential buildings. After careful consideration, he grabbed Imo's hand and left.
"Gege Chen, I'm so tired. I want to go to sleep." Upon hearing Xiaoyi's pitiful voice, Gu Zechen bent over and picked her up, gently patting her back. Meanwhile, his footsteps continued to search for a place where they could take shelter from the wind.
In the months of August and September, the temperature difference between day and night was significant. Gu Zechen knew that he had to find a place to shelter before Yimo fell into a deep sleep.
"Brother Chen, I'm cold!" Holding tightly onto Imo in his arms, Gu Zechen, who was exhausted, finally spotted a cement pipe piled up on a construction site.
With a tired face full of joy, Gu Zechen hurriedly carried Yi Mo as he walked towards the passage.
In the dilapidated pipeline, there were dried grass left behind by previous wanderers. Gu Zechen carefully laid Imo down and then found some branches to block the air inlet before holding Imo and falling asleep, exhausted.
Gu Zechen woke up feeling hungry, his stomach throbbing with pain, while a nauseating taste lingered in his mouth.
"Chen Gege!" Upon hearing Yimo's shout, Gu Zechen put his hand that was rubbing his stomach down and lifted Yimo up.
Yi Mo rubbed her eyes, looking at Gu Zechen with a blurry vision. She murmured, "Brother Chen, where are we? Can we go back? I miss Chairman Mom!"
Gu Zechen embraced Yi Mo in his arms and then gently stroked her until he finally calmed her down.
Because he was young and unable to speak, Gu Zechen couldn't find a suitable job. Thus, he could only pick up some discarded items from the trash can every day with Yi Mo and sell them in exchange for a little food and water.
Over time, everyone around them knew about these two brothers. Any valuable waste would be directly given to Gu Zechen.
Some kindhearted people would also give the two children clothes, occasionally even sending over some meals. Whenever this happened, it was the happiest time for Yimo and Gu Zechen.
Winter came and summer went. Gu Zechen and Yi Mo spent nearly a year in this cement pipe.
When Gu Zechen left the welfare home, he was already thirteen years old. He had learned some characters from the director of the welfare home. Every time he found a book, he would treasure it and carefully put it away.
Over time, a stack of books accumulated in the concrete pipe, which was the most precious wealth of Gu Zechen.
