Fu Yuye is getting married.
I don't know where he found out my address from, after all, we haven't seen each other for four years.
Before I received this invitation, I always thought that we would never see each other again in this lifetime. So when I saw Fu Yuye's name on the classy and pretentious invitation, I even doubted if my eyes were playing tricks on me.
Xiaoju held onto my neck, pointing at the embossed patterns on the invitation card.
He said, "Greeting card."
He has just started attending a small class, his speech is unclear and tender, often mixing up sounds. He often becomes the butt of jokes. However, when it comes to these two characters, his pronunciation is clear and accurate. I pat his naturally curly hair and say, "Yes. It's a greeting card."
During Christmas time in their kindergarten, they had just finished making greeting cards. He drew an indistinguishable green creature on his card, and then their teacher wrote words of blessings on it, intending to give them to the parents.
Xiao Ju couldn't wait to open it and have a look. Perhaps she had a particular fondness for the shiny gold dust on top.
I carried him back home, and as soon as he slid off my body in one roll, he ran to his little corner full of toys and pulled out a Thomas the Tank Engine toy train from it.
The little train, which used to run on the tracks, got put away in my suitcase a couple of days ago. It was my way of punishing it for being so preoccupied with playing and refusing to tidy up.
So today, he obediently ran over and asked me, "Can I play with the toy train?"
I said, "If you can clean up by yourself, then I'll bring it out for you."
He nodded without any hesitation.
But in the past, he had done the same thing, and the result was making a mess of the living room.
"You have thought it through, so you must follow through with your words. Otherwise, you wouldn't be a good child."
Children of this age are particularly fixated on the three words "good child." It's like how every day in kindergarten, the teachers would stamp a small red flower on their palms, symbolizing that they have met the standards of being a good child. It would be especially embarrassing for them if they didn't receive a small red flower one day.
But I have a bad memory, so whenever I encounter troublesome things, I can just act cutesy and get by with it.
I don't want him to become that kind of child, or even a future adult who betrays trust.
I hope that he possesses all the wonderful qualities in the world. Therefore, I am also willing to patiently and strictly teach him.
"Are you sure?"
Xiao Ju hesitated for a moment before finally nodding decisively.
So I took out the tracks from the storage box and spent ten minutes setting them up for him. He joyfully sat on the carpet and played with Thomas tirelessly.
When I finished cooking and came out of the kitchen, he was fully focused on staring at the track. That side profile made me think of someone again.
It has to be said, that person's genes are as powerful and dominant as his personality.
Xiao Ju's eyebrows, eyes, nose, and facial features all followed that person.
Of course, I carefully compared my childhood photos, and Xiaozhu looks like me too, but only at first glance. When you look at her for a second time, she doesn't look like me at all.
I said, "It's time to eat, go wash your hands!"
Xiao Ju completely ignored me the first time.
I called out for the second time, and then he quickly got up, smilingly repeating, "Time to eat!"
Then he walked to the bathroom to wash his hands.
I placed a little stool for the child to stand on under the sink, and added a non-slip mat so that he wouldn't fall. After he finished washing his hands, he grabbed a tissue to wipe them dry before climbing up onto the chair himself. When he saw some bamboo shoots, his face lit up and he said, "Daddy, I like eating bamboo shoots."
I picked up a chopstick for him, but didn't allow him to eat more.
He has been a picky eater since childhood, always having a liking for rather peculiar flavors of food.
Unlike most children who like to eat cake frosting, he prefers to eat stir-fried bamboo shoots, water chestnuts, and green beans.
These are probably hard and crunchy foods.
Every time, I worry that he might not be getting proper nutrition, so I always force him to eat some meat.
Or maybe make him some meat soup to mix with rice.
He finished eating the shoots, but hardly touched the rice. Yet, he wanted to eat more.
I had no choice but to take the spoon and forcefully feed him. Surprisingly, he obediently opened his mouth and swallowed each bite with a smacking sound.
However, the obsession with bamboo shoots still runs deep.
I have decided that no appearance of this on the dinner table for this entire week. Otherwise, he will probably only eat this again.
After finishing our meal, I set up the cartoon on TV for him and went to tidy up the table and wash the dishes.
When I came out, I suddenly saw that the invitation on the coffee table had already been opened.
I walked over and picked up the invitation card.
I heard Xiao Ju say, "Flower."
He was referring to the stamp on the greeting card.
My gaze paused on the newcomer's name.
Fu Yu Ye.
Quiet.
The bride's name is Anjing. It's quite unique.
It's just that the name Fu Yuye doesn't seem to match no matter how you look at it.
This sudden invitation is like a stone thrown into a calm lake, shattering my peaceful life.
Or maybe it was the long-awaited opportunity for me to completely put an end to a past that has been tormenting me, and finally let me move on.
Did Fu Yuye always know where I was?
Does he know how I am living now?
Does he know that I have a child?
I don't know if he knows or not.
However, with his action, came an invitation.
I just understood. He has clearly drawn a boundary between us.
When it comes to emotional connection, it was only during the half year when I served as his private tutor.
I sealed the invitation and threw it into the trash bin.
I won't go.
I don't have the time to attend the wedding of a student I taught years ago, let alone the fact that this person is someone I have liked for so many years.
