“I don’t give a shit and you guys ain’t going here.”
Pater then took a glance at other villagers behind him, all of them were holding a stick or a spade to prevent the car from going further.
“Really?” Wayne narrowed his eyes. Those who were against his wills never ended up in peace.
“What’s this attitude? You filthy rich guy. I’m not gonna let you take our property away!” The leader yelled at Wayne as he was backed up by a bunch of his people.
“Yeah, we curse you.” The rest of them agreed.
“What are you doing here?” An old man came from the corner of the road with a crane. And who’s walking with him was--Frank Su!
It seemed like that Wayne Chen had already made some arrangements at the place.
He’s never going to let anyone else to ruin his plans.
“Mayor, don’t you know who are they? They must be those to tear our houses down!”
“Just go! Don’t mess up around here!” The mayor was not pleased.
“But...” Peter wanted to say something but he was tapped by his man on the shoulder and left.
They stepped away, stopped at a pavilion about 20 meters from them and watched.
“It’s done.” Frank got close to Wayne and whispered.
Wayne then nodded satisfactorily. But he’s clear that there’s still a long way to go to realize his project.
Afterwards, the three of them were invited to the mayor’s house.
As over 80% families around the village grew herbs, the place was named as the Herb Village. The mayor was now 78, he had been on the position since he was in his 30s. The old guy was very prestigious and was respected by all villagers.
While the mayor had been living a simple life--a dozen of his families members lived together in those six rooms of that single-storey house.
As they stepped into the living room, wife of the mayor’s eldest son warmly served some tea with crudely made clay bowls.
Obviously, the Herb Village was somewhat impoverished.
“Mayor, I assume Frank has already informed you our purpose to come here.” Wayne was respectful to the old man in front of him.
The old guy didn’t reply but rolling up some herbs to make a cigarette for Wayne. He then lit it up and puffed as the young man politely turned him down.
“Mr Chen, now you see what this place is like. It has been poverty-stricken for centuries. We are surrounded by mountains that crops or herbs we grow can’t be transported to the town. Young men won’t stay, they all leave for big cities for more opportunities. Those who are not willing to work hard or just want to cut corners linger in the village and then cause disturbances to order and public security around the village.”
“Although I approve the allocation conditions you’ve suggested, we need to gain acceptance from other villagers. So I’m holding a meeting for your initiative and listen to their opinions.” The mayor frowned as he knew most of them were not that open to persuasion and they might put some unacceptable clauses in the contract.
“Then may I come to the meeting as well? I guess I could convince then that all of them will get what they deserve if the land is to be constructed by P&F.” Wayne smiled.
“Stay for lunch.” The mayor’s wife warmly welcomed them and grinned.
After calling her son to kill a chicken, the woman and her daughter-in-laws went to collect vegetables at the backyard. Jane then joined them. She also helped to slice the meat and cooked the dishes in the kitchen. She got really well with these women.
After a while, dishes like fried kidney beans, stewed mushroom with chicken, scrambled egg with tomato, shredded cucumber with sauce and more were already served.
Jane had tried lots of delicacies, but this was the first time she had local farm-flavored dishes. The food tasted extremely delicious to her and she had two full bowls of rice this noon.
As for Wayne Chen, he made some toasts with the mayor and his sons.
Frank was indeed Wayne’s best assistant. Maybe it was because of the fact that he had joined the army, he’s not only good at being a bodyguard, but also impeccable at having alcohol for Wayne at the table.
There was an old saying like this: “When drinking with a bosom friend, a thousand cups will still be too little. When the conversation gets disagreeable, to say one word more is a waste of breath.”
The atmosphere among these men went on perfectly well. Even if those young men didn’t approve of their father’s idea, now they all regarded Wayne as their friend and started to believe that his proposal was helpful to the future development for their village.
They gained strong bonds together after the meal. What’s more, sons of the mayor all joined Frank’s bodyguard team and worked for Wayne.
The mayor decided to have the meeting after the sun went down.
“Mayor, let me to go around and have a look at the village.”
“Then I go with you.”
“You don’t have to. Please take a nap. The initiative meeting will be an important matter, we need you to support us then.”
“Alright. If you insist. But take care. Some of them still haven’t accept your purpose.”
“Dad, let me be their tour guide.” The eldest son suggested.
“Okay. You take your one of your brothers with you.” The mayor agreed.
Wayne then followed them and left. It was good for him to traipse around with some locals even though he had Frank to protect him.
The place was so underdeveloped that there was hardly a cement road in the village. What’s more, it had rained last night that their shoes and trousers were all soon stained with mud.
Some roofed their houses with broken tiles, others even with dry straws.
“But how could they don’t feel like having this place constructed living under this condition?” Jane just didn’t understand it.
While Frank had already dug the truth out as he got there yesterday.
