Sitting in the passenger seat, Alyssa Lin took a deep breath. Basil Xu gave a wicked smile when he noticed the worried look on her face. "Are you nervous?"
Alyssa held her resume tight and glanced at him. "A little," she nodded.
"I thought you were afraid of nothing,"
he joked.
When the car came to a halt in front of a building, Alyssa got out. Basil followed. He walked around the car and came to her. They both looked up at the grand office building of JK Group. It was only then that she responded, "This is my dream come true. I’m really excited and nervous."
Looking at her, Basil smiled affectionately. "Relax. If you screw up, you can always join my company. We cherish skilled people."
Alyssa rolled her eyes at him. "Don’t jinx it. Wish me luck. Bye."
She patted his shoulder before she walked into the building.
Basil smiled as he watched her figure receding.
If he could foresee how things would go, he would do everything to convince Alyssa to work in his company instead of JK Group, the company she had been dreaming of joining since high school.
The CEO of JK Group was Aaron Gu, who used to be in the special forces. After he left the army, he started his own business and proved to be very successful. JK Group was listed within a matter of a few years and had the momentum of becoming one of the leading enterprises of the city. Alyssa had once met him at a cocktail party when she was in her senior year in high school.
The moment she met him, a voice screamed inside her—she wanted to join JK Group.
After that, she went to college and worked hard; her grades always ranked top in her department. All this was because Aaron had said during his speech at her university that every year the best student of the business school could intern in JK Group after graduation. This year, she had graduated with honor from H City University.
Alyssa didn't know why she had to join this company. She had kept asking herself the same question night after night. Once she closed her eyes, that cold pair of eyes of his would pop into her head. It made him look so unapproachable and overbearing. Yet, she just couldn't get him out of her mind anymore after their first chance meeting.
"Excuse me, I’m a graduate of H City University. Today is my first day.
Who should I report for duty to, please?"
Alyssa asked a professional-looking receptionist, still holding her resume.
"Please go to the CEO’s office on the top floor. The CEO assigns the graduates their roles on their first day."
The receptionist was polite and warm. Alyssa liked the company already. The front desk represented the company on many levels. Looks were not the only requirement for the job.
"Thank you,"
Alyssa said.
Walking through the bright hallway, she found the elevator, got in and pressed the button. Her heart raced more rapidly as the elevator ascended.
She didn’t know what her future would be like, but she was happy that her four years of hard work paid off—her dream had come true.
The elevator arrived. She stepped out. The top floor was very quiet. Everyone looked serious and busy. Some people noticed her come in, but they only threw her a casual glance and continued working. They look professional and focused. Impressive, Alyssa thought to herself.
She walked as quietly as she could. To make a good first impression on her boss, she had gotten up early in the morning and put on some makeup. After asking Basil’s opinion about what to wear, she had put on a simple, tasteful outfit.
She knocked on the door of the CEO’s office.
While waiting for an answer, she took a few deep breaths to relax a bit.
"Come in,"
a deep voice said from inside.
